The origins of the Peterbald

The Peterbald (St. Petersburg Hairless, St. Petersburg Sphinx, or Hairless Siamese) originated in 1994 in St. Petersburg, Russia. There, a male Don Sphynx was mated with a female Oriental. The kittens from the litter were used to further develop the new breed. Other offspring were later mated with Siamese cats, creating uniquely beautiful cats that quickly gained fame in St. Petersburg.
Already in 1996, the Russian Felinological Federation accepted the cats, and a year later, TICA recognized the new breed and defined a precise standard. Fife recognized the breed in 2006.

The Peterbald's appearance

Il Gatto Peterbald ha dimensioni medie, con un corpo snodato e muscoloso. Gli adulti maschi di questa razza pesano generalmente tra i 3 e i 5 kg, le femmine sono più piccole e pesano dai 2 ai 4kg. Hanno una struttura ossea leggera, che permette loro di muoversi agilmente e velocemente. Le loro zampe lunghe e slanciate li rendono ancora più eleganti anche quando corrono.

Il Mantello

Il mantello del Peterbald può essere di diversi tipi

NUDO: Caratterizzato da una pelle morbida, calda tipo gomma
FLOCK: Manto molto corto e rado, da sembrare quasi nudo. morbido e vellutato al tocco, come camoscio o buccia di pesca (non per niente viene anche definito Chamois o Peach)
VELOUR: Manto leggermente più lungo del flock (1-3 mm), tanto che spesso si distinguono solo al tatto; il manto velour è tipo una pelliccia di ciniglia, seppur di aspetto simile al gatto nudo.
BRUSH: Manto che può essere lungo e folto oppure lievemente riccio o ondulato. Ha sempre le vibrisse ricce. A volte il gatto con questo tipo di manto perde il pelo sul corpo e lo mantiene solo su zampe e coda. Questi gatti prendono il nome di “fur-point”
NORMAL COAT (STRAIGHT COAT): manto normale. In quanto non possiedono il gene della nudità.

Hanno baffi e pelo dritti, come un gatto normale.

Pertanto il loro aspetto è come quello di un siamese/orientale, sebbene comunque questi gatti siano di razza Peterbald.

Il gatto Peterbald, a causa della sua scarsa pelatura, è sensibile agli sbalzi di temperatura e può soffrire di surriscaldamento o raffreddamento.

In estate, è bene proteggerlo dal sole e fornirgli ombra. In inverno, è bene coprirlo con maglioncini e lasciargli a disposizione coperte.

La temperatura corporea normale di un gatto adulto è compresa tra 38,0°C e 39,3°C, una temperatura al di sotto di 37,7°C è considerata ipotermia.

Igiene e toelettatura

In assenza di pelo, il loro derma è più suscettibile agli oli e alla sporcizia. Quindi, è fondamentale stabilire una routine di pulizia.

Un bagnetto ogni 3-4 settimane e consigliato utilizzando uno shampoo delicato specifico per gatti. Questo non solo rimuove lo sporco, ma aiuta anche a mantenere la pelle idratata. Va asciugato bene dopo il bagnetto tamponandolo delicatamente con un asciugamano.
Particolare attenzione va riservata alle orecchie, gli occhi e i denti. Le orecchie sporgenti del Peterbald potrebbero accumulare cerume, vanno pulite delicatamente con un batuffolo di cotone umido.

The Peterbald's Character

The Peterbald is an affectionate and loyal cat. It connects easily and tends to share its love with every member of the family, as long as they respect its space. It willingly participates in domestic life and all human activities. The breed's empathetic nature is evident in its tendency to cheer others up when they're having a bad day: performing ballet and acrobatics is sometimes truly hilarious and certainly improves one's mood.

This breed is cheerful, sociable, lively, and very clingy. They love being held, or at least being in close contact with, and sleeping with their human. In short, they're not suitable for those looking for an independent cat, more like a dog in a cat's body. It's impossible to get bored with a Peterbald! They're everywhere, and with their cheeky personality and constant desire to have fun, they make everyone laugh. At the same time, however, they're very patient and, thanks to their great intelligence and curiosity, will find something to do on their own if their owner is busy. These cats are very active; a tall, sturdy scratching post is essential at home. They get along very well with other cats and dogs.

These cats love being the center of attention and don't tolerate solitude well, even temporarily. Being an oriental breed, they are very talkative, but less so than Siamese or Thai cats.

The Peterbald produces a smaller amount of allergens than other breeds, however it is not a completely hypoallergenic cat and it depends a lot on the person's level of tolerance.
